A Guide to Idola Stellarum’s Resources on Astrological Magic

Over the first two years of Idola Stellarum’s existence we have accumulated a wealth of resources—to the point that navigating the site might come to be somewhat unwieldly or unintuitive. To attempt to rectify any such difficulties and tend the garden somewhat, we have organized the available blog posts, courses, and resource pages under rough headings that may help folks get a handle on what they’re looking for based on where they’re at.

Two notes:

  1. Some resources are listed under multiple headings since they fall under multiple projects or categories.
  2. Resources prefaced with [IS] are available only to Inner Sanctum members (more information here for hwo to join and get access to these member resources).

Also, as a reminder, we curate a list of free online resources for astrological magic and planetary magic from other sources as well!

Starting Down the Starry Path: Resources for Beginners

Several of our public blog posts are aimed at beginners. These posts offering some definitions and contexts for some basic ideas and principles in astrological magic. We recommend absolute beginners start with the first three of these posts to get some basic orientation to what is going on:

We also have an extensive resource guide to discernment about where to begin with astrological talismans for folks who are considering starting a relationship with their first astrological talisman, as well as an Inspirit Salon that discusses some slightly more advanced ideas on the same topic:

A new course entitled Wondrously Embroidered: The Worldview of Astrological Magic beginning in April 2025 is exploring the history and philosophy of astrological magic in a way that is designed to appeal to newcomers, enthusiasts, and practitioners alike:

We also like to invite anyone, beginners and seasoned practitioners alike, to familiarize themselves with and appreciate perhaps the single most important elder statesman of the contemporary revival of astrological magic in the English-speaking world, Christopher Warnock:

Two Inspirit Salon recordings in particular may be of use to people finding their way along the starry path:

Finally, an early talk by Rain & Pallas for Drew Levanti’s Initiate program offers a longform take on our philosophy and approach to astrological magic:

“Be Not Afraid”: Wrangling with Anxiety, Doubt, & Perfectionism

The fear of “doing things wrong,” upsetting the spirits, or other worries can get in the way of engaging with the spheres, whether devotionally or through talismans. Several of our resources are aimed at addressing such troubles of the mind.

Our two-part blog post series on the safety of astrological talismans also may serve to answer some relevant questions:

In another post, we speak to how we attempt to embody values that hold and address people’s anxities:

Questions about how a talisman will or will not play nicely with one’s own natal chart may frequently arise out of worries and anxieties, and we addressed these common inquiries in a semi-comprehensive blog post:

Eclipses are often a magnet for fears about astrology and astrological magic, and so we found it important to create a resource addressing some relevant issues:

Two Inspirit Salons speak to these issues more directly:

Our talk for Drew Levanti’s Initiate program was framed with some of these issues in mind as well:

Two of our Practitioner Series videos also contain valuable insights: Ari speaks about shame and self-trust, and Hawk speaks about consistency, perfectionism, and more:

Re-Enchantment: Deprogramming from Materialism

To the extent that all of our resources come from within and expound upon a magical, enchanted worldview, most of what we write and create could be considered to fall under this umbrella to some degree. Some of our resources more specifically and directly address the issue, however, and we list those below.

This blog post provides a basic introduction to this topic:

A few Inspirit Salons speak to these issues:

Two longer-form talks address these issues from various angles in more detail:

Perhaps the most extensive resource on re-enchantment and challenging the suppositions of a modern, materialist worldview is our ongoing course for Inner Sanctum members, [IS] Wondrously Embroidered: The Worldview of Astrological Magic. Loosely intended to have the substance and arc of a semester-long college course, 13 lessons are planned for the course:

Cultivating Spirit Relationships

In a sense, almost all of the Idola Stellarum resources touch on this topic at least indirectly, since we approach talismanic astrological magic through a relational ecological perspective. That said, some of our resources are more explicitly about the theory and practice of how to relate to spirits and cultivate these non-corporeal relationships.

Our blog post series on the nature of astrological talismanic spirits shares some insights about the nature of talismanic spirits:

One primary purpose of our Inspirit Salon meetings is to normalize talking about—and talking to—spirits, and so the theme of cultivating spirit relationships weaves through most of our Salons. Several of them in particular are more focused on this general area, however:

Deepening Stellar Devotion

Our Prayer in Astrological Magic blog post series contains a wealth of information on stellar devotion in the tradition of astrological magic:

Some bread-and-butter resources on the Orphic Hymns & Other Prayers to the Planets may also be useful:

The above blog posts on prayer in astrological magic are also contained and more richly presented in a mini-course called Suitably and Seasonably Composed: A Guide to Prayer in Astrological Magic:

For a more esoteric and personal reflection on stellar devotion, see this blog post by Rain:

Several of our Inspirit Salon special guests have shared relevant experience and wisdom:

A pair of posts on some Renaissance planetary prayers provides some intruguing practical and theoretical tools:

The PGM contains a wealth of solar devotional materials, which we summarize here:

Finally, our blog post series on Epithets for the Seven Spheres provides some more advanced material for leveling up the specificity of your stellar prayers:

The Spheres: Resource on Particular Planets & Spheres

Two Inspirit Salons may help offer some general framing for the seven spheres:

These blog posts are also highly relevant to issues of timing and technique:

An introduction to the issues of timing can be found in a couple of Inspirit Salons:

Two of the Practitioner Series recordings delve into some detail on timng and technique issues:

Our evolving blog post series on Evaluating Magical Elections provides some of our most technical material on elections:

These technical electional topics are also treated more extensively in an evolving mini-course on Evaluating Astromagical Elections:

The Academics’ Corner: Texts, History, & Tradition

Perhaps the best place to start is our list of recommended books! We also like to point people straightaway toward the resources and offerings of Christopher Warnock, the elder statesman of the contemporary revival of astrological magic in the English-speaking world:

This blog post provides a view on a common question through the lens of traditional source texts:

Our course on worldview (full lesson listing above) involves a deep dive into the history of astrological magic, with extensive citation and research into the secondary literature of several relevant academic cognate disciplines:

Two of our Inspirit Salons have focused on the issue of tradition:

A wealth of resources documents issues related to planetary correspondences and significations in traditional texts:

In a fairly niche blog post, Rain documents their encounter with a new source text:
