Description
Of the nature of the Moon in Taurus, these talismans were created with the intent of endowing their bearers with heightened alertness and the determination to overcome obstacles and difficulties—that is, grit.
One might be forgiven for thinking that the Moon is the planet of rest and sleep. After all, the Moon is one of the quintessential symbols of nighttime, when the majority of human beings set aside daylight matters and consciousness and descend into the realms of Hypnos. Especially in the ancient world, when human-created light was scarce and not so easy to create, tend, and transport, the Moon’s share of the day slowed things down considerably.
This is not, however, the picture our ancient sources paint.
The Moon, while we are sleeping, sets about “wandering through the Gloom of night,” as Thomas Taylor puts it in his translation of the Orphic Hymn to Selene—which also lists Luna as the “lover of vigilance,” or as Kristin Mathis of the Mysteria Mundi projects translates it, she is “wide awake.”
Picatrix, too, depicts the Moon as more suitable for caffeinated conversational marathons and all-nighter study sessions than bedtime lullabies: “She signifies the beginning of works, great cogitations about things, good perception and motion, the best discussions in councils, utterances well spoken, daring in all things” (Book III, Chapter 7, tr. Greer & Warnock).
Going back further still, the Papyri Graecae Magicae aka the Greek Magical Papyri offer an image of the Moon that quivers, shivers, squirms, and screams:
…many-formed, who arm your hands
With dreaded, murky lamps, who shake your locks
Of fearful serpents on your brow, who sound
The roar of bulls out from your mouths, whose womb
Is decked out with the scales of creeping things,
With pois’nous rows of serpents down the back,
Bound down your backs with horrifying chains
Night-Crier…
…goddess of the triple ways, who hold
Untiring flaming fire in triple baskets…
Give heed, you who protect the spacious world
At night, before whom daimons quake in fear
And gods immortal tremble…
—PGM, Prayer to Selene, IV, 2786-2870 (tr. Hans Dieter Betz)
Ancient epithets of the Moon attest to this as well, as the co-personification of Artemis and Selene led to numerous epithets praising and describing the Moon’s qualities as a huntress: stalking, watching, and above all alert. The Huntress, Huntress Who Wears the Short Dorian Tunic, Goddess of the Chase, Who Haunts the Forest, Swift Running, Far-Darting, Archeress, Roaming in the Night, Lover of the Chase, Loving to Inspire Frenzy, Slayer of Wild Beasts, Bearer of the Bow—titles that, if anything, suggest restlessness rather than slumber.
The Alertness & Grit talismans tap into that aspect of the Moon that, indeed, never sleeps, but always has her hands dirty with the ever-changingness of the teeming, growing, gleaming, dying, constantly regenerating sublunary world.
The image engraved upon these talismans from Book II, Chapter 10 of Picatrix was especially fitting for the Moon in Taurus: “the form of a man with the head of a bird holding a staff above him, and holding the image of a branch in bloom in his hand.” Capturing the teeming animality of the Moon, the original purpose of this image was that “whoever carries [it] on a journey will not be tired no matter where they go.”
If any planet signifies sleep it is arguably Saturn, whose slow movement corresponds to the languor of slumber (indeed, al-Biruni attributes sleep as the state of being signified by Saturn). The Moon, by contrast, is renowned in astrological and ancient astronomical lore as being principally fast, darting through the heavens with much greater alacrity than any of the other wandering stars. The Moon, indeed, as the ultimate and constant wanderer, is perhaps best positioned to aid with alertness and the endurance and fortitude of the long-distance traveler, whether distances along the earth or distances of mind and spirit.
The reference to caffeine above was not an accident. Coffee and tea, as with any psychoactive substances, impart results dependent on dose: alertness can sometimes tip over into agitation if we’re not careful about regulating ourselves. Indeed, Rain’s initial adjustment period with the Alertness & Grit talisman involved several days of uncomfortably heightened energy bordering on agitation (though we do note that Rain has a classically difficult time with Lunar talismans due to a particularly gnarly natal Moon situation). Although this settled down fairly quickly, it’s still worth mentioning, since although alertness can be a good and necessary thing, it can be unwelcome for those prone to hypervigilance, wake/sleep disturbances or insomnia, or (hypo)mania. It’s also worth noting that our testing has been with the iron pyrite versionsof the talismans, and we suspect though have not confirmed through experience that the mother-of-pearl version may soften potential hard edges in the adjustment period or beyond.

Essential Features of the Election
For planetary astromagical elections, we require that the relevant planet either rises on the Ascendant or culminates on the Midheaven during the relevant planetary hour. This election took place during Moon hour with the Moon rising at 20° Taurus, where she was dignified by exaltation and triplicity.
Planetary elections also require the Moon to be in sufficiently good condition. During this election, as mentioned, the Moon was dignified by exaltation and triplicity. Her speed was moderately fast and she was free from malefic influences—separating from a sextile to Saturn and in aversion to Mars (approaching, though safely out of orb, to a conjunction in Gemini in a bit over a day).
Since the 1st house signifies the bearer of the talisman, we also look at the condition of the Lord of the Ascendant in planetary elections. With Taurus rising, peregrine Venus in Leo was the Lord of the Ascendant. Free from malefic influence, Venus was coming out from being under the beams (moving quickly and 14°57′ from the Sun), making her in phasis, granting some prominence and accidental dignity to Venus, who was both the Lord of the Ascendant and the Moon’s Lord.
Further Magical Factors in the Election
Bolstering the Moon’s substantial essential dignity (exaltation & triplicity), her Lord (i.e., the planet ruling the Moon’s current sign Taurus), Venus, was in phasis—a condition of prominence represented by the reappearance of a planet as it comes out from under the beams of the Sun. The Moon’s next aspect was also to Venus as well, intimately tying the election’s significator to her Lord and the Lord of the Ascendant. Note that medieval texts on astrological magic, most notably, Picatrix, favor any aspect to a benefic planet as a fortitude, and so the fact that the Moon’s aspect to Venus was a square simply moderates (rather than undermining or negating) the positivity of this connection.
Reflection on Weaknesses of the Election
Having Mars in the 1st house would not be our 1st choice, though this malefic tinge to the election is counterbalanced by the copresence of the greater benefic Jupiter in the 1st house. We also note that we chose to end the working before the fixed star Algol rose on the Ascendant and that the carving of stones finished before she was within 3° of the Ascendant.
We also note for completeness that some mages consider the Moon on the Ascendant to be an affliction. However, we emphasize that both Picatrix and De Quindecim Stellis list copious electional recipes that include the Moon rising on the Ascendant—including Moon talismans, as in Book II, Chapter 10 of Picatrix that lists numerous talismans with instructions such as “do this in the hour of the Moon with the Moon rising.” We therefore conclude that the tradition clearly licenses proceeding with astromagical elections that include this condition when divination supports doing so.
Recommendations
Among planetary talismans, Moon talismans have a reputation at Idola Stellarum as the most likely to come along with noticeable and turbulent adjustment periods, particularly for people prone to mood swings and emotional vulnerability and instability. Although our experience has been that such adjustment periods are temporary (everything Lunar is temporary, after all), they can potentially be unnerving and disruptive.
Particularly given the significations of this working and the possibility of agitation due to elevated energy or vigilance, we do recommend that anyone considering adopting a Moon talisman take stock of your support network and prudently assess whether you currently have the bandwidth in your personal and professional life to absorb Lunar turbulence at the moment. Doubly so if you are someone who tends to be “in your head,” disconnected/dissociated from your body on a regular basis, or are already vulnerable to sleep disruptions, mania, or hypomania. T
hose with a natally afflicted Moon (e.g., combust or besieged Moon, Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio) would be particularly wise to exercise extra caution and divination in their discernment about whether to adopt one of these talismans.
Ceremonial Details
Gemstone & Talismanic Image
These talismans were carved with a Lunar image from the Picatrix: “the form of a man with the head of a bird holding a staff above him, and holding the image of a branch in bloom in his hand.” The original purpose of this image was that “whoever carries [it] on a journey will not be tired no matter where they go” (Picatrix, Book II, Chapter 10), lending it significant affinity for the significations of attention and endurance in this particular working. The keywords GRIT and ALERT were also etched above the image.
Pyrite was regarded in the ancient world as being “as strong as the diamond” (The Peterborough Lapidary, tr. Francis Young, p. 15) and was chosen as a stone for this working due to its association with iron and endurance. Albertus Magnus in his Book of Minerals writes of a stone he calls andromata that moderns identify with pyrite that “it has power against rage and easy excitement of the mind and sadness and heaviness” (p. 74, tr. Dorothy Wyckoff). Of mother of pearl, Albertus Magnus writes that “it is said that this stone is not injured by fire” (Book of Minerals, p. 80, tr. Dorothy Wyckoff), lending it an association with hardiness and imperviousness.
Ritual Setup
An altar of silver and crystal featuring plentiful candles, fresh flowers, and willow branches was dedicated to the Moon prior to this working. Copious offerings of spirits, wine, milk, honey, olive oil, and food were offered to Luna under the visage of a large bust of Diana. Among the many white candles providing illumination for the ritual, three candles ritually prepared and emblazoned with sigils and the kamea of the Moon were employed to define the space with Lunar structure. The working was opened with invocations of the spirits of the Moon and a bespoke petition penned for this particular working, invoking aspects of the Moon fit for the purposes of these talismans.
Suffumigation
The incense for this election was prepared according to a modified version of Agrippa’s recipe in Three Books of Occult Philosophy: “For a fumigation for the Moon, we compile the dried head of a frog, the eye of a bull, white poppyseed, frankincense, and camphor. This mixture is incorporated with menstrual blood or the blood of a goose” (Book I, Ch. 44, p. 146, tr. Eric Purdue). For this election, we opted for the vegetal ingredients alone: white poppyseed, royal Hojari frankincense, and camphor granules. This mixture was consecrated during a previous Idola Stellarum Moon in Cancer talismanic operation.
