Description
Of the nature of the Moon in Cancer, these talismans were created with the intent of endowing their bearers with youthful radiance and the healthy flush of beauty.
(CW: talk of bodies & embodiment, mention of trauma in the abstract.)
Of the seven traditional planets, Luna has a special place. Her proximity to us—nearest of any of the stars, whether wandering or fixed—actually partly defines our world of manifestation and change. In the medieval worldview, the place where we live is known as the sublunary realm: that is, the world beneath the Moon. Whirling at the threshold of the heavens, Luna “receives the virtues of the planets and pours them out into the world, and is the source of natural virtue” (Picatrix, Book III, Chapter 2).
Mediatrix of stellar energies, the Queen of the Stars translates between the perfect and unchanging forms of the heavens and the mutable embodiment of all of us sublunary creatures. Hence her association with the crossroads and the triple nature: the perspective that sees the past, present, and future, the underworld, the world of the living, and the heavens. A prayer to Selene from the Greek Magical Papyrii invokes these aspects with trancelike repetition:
“triple-sounding,
Triple-voiced, triple-headed Selene,
Triple-pointed, triple-faced, triple-necked,
And goddess of the triple ways, who hold
Untiring flaming fire in triple baskets,
And you who oft frequent the triple way
And rule the triple decades with three forms“—PGM, Prayer to Selene, IV, 2523-2567 (tr. Hans Dieter Betz)
With a foot (or maybe more accurately, a face) in each of the worlds, the Moon involves herself in birth, growth, change, and, fundamentally, corporeality more so than any other planet. Luna’s association with creation and beginnings, as well as her Orphic status as the Mother of Ages, also lend to significations of infancy, childhood, and youth in general.
While other planets may foster and connect us up with our so-called higher faculties, Luna connects us to our so-called lower: the chthonic, the embodied, and above all the animal. The PGM prayer to Selene quoted above as well as another prayer to Selene in the same volume undulate with chthonic animality, enumerating a teeming catalogue of Luna’s bestial associations:
“who shake your locks
Of fearful serpents on your brow, who sound
The roar of bulls out from your mouths, whose womb
Is decked out with the scales of creeping things,
With pois’nous rows of serpents down the back,
Bound down your backs with horrifying chains
Night-Crier, bull-faced, loving solitude,
Bull-headed, you have eyes of bulls, the voice
Of dogs; you hide your forms in shanks of lions,
Your ankle is wolf-shaped, fierce dogs are dear
To you”—PGM, Prayer to Selene, IV, 2786-2870 (tr. Hans Dieter Betz)
These Moon in Cancer talismans aim to connect us up with our youthful, vibrant, and above (below?) all, animal body. Recent decades have certified our understanding that Serenity of the mind can often only come through secure connection to the body. To take a prime example, many people have great success coping with and integrating traumatic experiences through embodiment practices and somatic therapies.
Specifically aimed to bring their bearers Health, Youth, & Beauty, these talismans lean in to the embodied, corporeal, and maternal aspects of the Moon. It is worth noting that especially given that the Moon is waning in this election, these are probably not “sit back and wait” talismans, but rather talismans that will demand an active participation in the process. Giving up what is unhealthy, what burdens and ages us, and the habits that drive us toward ugliness may be a necessary part of the equation here.
As testimony: Pallas, who has always struggled with managing their hair, proceeded to spontaneously return to their natural hair colour not long after consecrating their talisman, and—after years of hemming and hawing about the expense—invested in custom, natural hair products. Soon, we were surprised when Pallas’ natural curls—long thought lost as they grew older—returned to even their previously bleached hair, which has also grown much faster and thicker than it has for years. Not simply the fact of the change but the ease with which they achieved it are exactly in line with the intent of these Moon in Cancer talismans.
This Moon in Cancer series features two options:
- First, a traditional pendant option: lapis lazuli set in a sterling silver crown bezel setting. Lapis is attested as “a stone very good for medicines” in the Peterborough Lapidary (p. 82, tr. Francis Young), and is attributed to the Moon by Picatrix.
- Second, an experimental quartz gua sha stone, engraved and set with herbs just like any other talisman. Gua sha stones, as used in Chinese medicine and beauty to stimulate the lymphatic system and improve blood flow by stroking them against the skin, have a natural lunar signification given the Moon’s association with “springs of water, lakes, swamps, and places of snow and wherever water is found” (Picatrix, Book III, Chapter 2). Note that this is the first time Idola Stellarum has offered gua sha talismans. They are an experimental addition to our offerings. They are also fragile and prone to break if dropped, so while meant to be used practically as a traditional gua sha stone, they require careful use and storage. Please be sure you are conversant with our guarantees and disclamers if you are considering adopting one of these talismans.

Essential Features of the Election
For planetary astromagical elections, we require that the relevant planet either rises on the Ascendant or culminates on the Midheaven during the relevant planetary hour. This election took place during Moon hour with the Moon rising at 27° Cancer, where she was dignified by domicile and face.
Planetary elections also require the Moon to be in sufficiently good condition. During this election, as mentioned, the Moon was dignified by domicile and face, and was otherwise unafflicted.
Since the 1st house signifies the bearer of the talisman, we also look at the condition of the Lord of the Ascendant in planetary elections. With Cancer rising, the same considerations above apply.
Further Magical Factors in the Election
In this election, the Moon was graced by a rare and auspicious condition called bonification by enclosure. This condition occurs when the last aspect the Moon made was to one of the benefic planets (Venus or Jupiter) and the next aspect the Moon will make is also to a benefic planet. When benefic enclosure happens, it is like the exact opposite of the phrase “between a rock and a hard place”: it is like the Moon having her best friends, allies, and benefactors surrounding and supporting her. In this instance, the Moon was separating from a sextile to Venus in Virgo, and her next aspect would be a square to Jupiter in Taurus.
Reflection on Weaknesses of the Election
A couple of factors deserve note here. Firstly, the Moon is quite slow in this election, moving at only 12°10′ per day (Picatrix specifically cautions against a Moon speed lower than 12° per day). Also, although the Moon is bonified by enclosure, both benefic planets are themselves afflicted (Venus is in her fall in Virgo, and Jupiter is retrograde in Taurus). Although this weakens the fortification of the enclosure, it does not eliminate it.
We also note for completeness that some mages consider the Moon on the Ascendant to be an affliction. However, we emphasize that both Picatrix and De Quindecim Stellis list copious electional recipes that include the Moon rising on the Ascendant—including Moon talismans, as in Book II, Chapter 10 of Picatrix that lists numerous talismans with instructions such as “do this in the hour of the Moon with the Moon rising.” We therefore conclude that the tradition clearly licenses proceeding with astromagical elections that include this condition when divination supports doing so.
Recommendations
Among planetary talismans, Moon talismans have a reputation at Idola Stellarum as the most likely to come along with noticeable and turbulent adjustment periods, particularly for people prone to mood swings and emotional vulnerability and instability. Although our experience has been that such adjustment periods are temporary (everything Lunar is temporary, after all), they can be unnerving and disruptive.
As such, we do recommend that anyone considering adopting a Moon talisman take stock of your support network and prudently assess whether you currently have the bandwidth in your personal and professional life to absorb Lunar turbulence at the moment. Doubly so if you are someone who tends to be “in your head” or disconnected/dissociated from your body on a regular basis. Those with a natally afflicted Moon (e.g., combust or besieged Moon, Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio) would be particularly wise to exercise extra caution and divination in their discernment about whether to adopt one of these talismans.
Ceremonial Details
Gemstone & Talismanic Image
These talismans were carved with a Lunar image from the Picatrix: “the form of a man with the head of a bird holding a staff above him, and holding the image of a branch in bloom in his hand.” The original purpose of this image was that “whoever carries [it] on a journey will not be tired no matter where they go” (Picatrix, Book II, Chapter 10). The keywords HEALTH and BEAUTY were etched above the image.
The sterling silver pendant versions of the Health, Youth, & Beauty talismans were carved from natural 18x25mm lapis lazuli cabochons. Lapis is attested as “a stone very good for medicines” in the Peterborough Lapidary (p. 82, tr. Francis Young).
The gua sha stone version of the Health, Youth, & Beauty talismans were carved from natural quartz gua sha stones. Quartz is attested as a stone that “makes a [person] much honoured” but also as good for nursing mothers and infants, solidifying the lunar associations. Quartz also “helps against colic” according to the same lapidary (ibid, p. 23), giving a nod to the health and well-being aspects of this election.
Ritual Setup
An altar of silver and crystal featuring mirrors, plentiful candles, glass spires, fresh flowers, and willow branches was dedicated to the Moon prior to this working. Plentiful offerings of spirits, wine, and food—including a whole crab—were offered to Luna under the visage of a large bust of Diana. Among the many white candles providing illumination for the ritual, three candles ritually prepared and emblazoned with sigils and the kamea of the Moon were employed to define the space with Lunar structure.
Suffumigation
The incense for this election was prepared according to a modified version of Agrippa’s recipe in Three Books of Occult Philosophy: “For a fumigation for the Moon, we compile the dried head of a frog, the eye of a bull, white poppyseed, frankincense, and camphor. This mixture is incorporated with menstrual blood or the blood of a goose” (Book I, Ch. 44, p. 146, tr. Eric Purdue). For this election, we opted for the vegetal ingredients alone: white poppyseed, royal Hojari frankincense, and camphor granules. This mixture was consecrated during the same electional window before being used as a suffumigation for the talismans.
