Relational Astromagic as an Antidote to Disconnection

Alienation is the mark of materialism. Practically any worldview divorced from the spiritual inevitably spirals toward atoms swirling in the void, one thing disconnected from another, each thing hermetically sealed with its own qualities, at best bouncing off of other entities like billiard balls on a game table.

Such an image inevitably erodes empathy. Metaphysical separation from one another ultimately implies there could be a me without a you, and therefore that what happens to me doesn’t have any necessary impact on you.

Idola Stellarum was founded, in part, to stand against such worldviews and to offer an alternative. We believe that the disconnection many people feel, whether in their day to day lives or in the deep recesses of their solitude, is neither inevitable nor inescapable. Rather, we understand the profound alienation many people feel or have felt as a culturally conditioned feature of our particular time and place, a downstream consequence of worldviews that are actually historically quite recent.

Astrological magic as it exists today—and as it existed in the medieval times when Picatrix was written—inherits myriad ancient beliefs and practices. As mages reconstructing this tradition, we can look to the ancient worldviews behind these beliefs and practices for conceptual tools to build a more sheltering, nourishing worldview.

At Idola Stellarum our efforts have gone toward offering an ecological spirit model that deeply honors the spatial, place-based, and profoundly relational nature of magic and devotion. Through stepping into deeper relationship with the celestial powers—as well as their domains and inheritances in our sublunary world—we thereby take intentional steps away from the disconnection that plagues the modern world.

In pondering what to name our autumnal equinox collection we remembered an ancient Greek term, Sympatheia, and felt that it beautifully captured the immanent, omnipresent reality of celestial relationship.

Sympatheia as an Expression of Our Interconnection

In ancient medicine, Hippocrates used the notion of sympatheia to refer to how an impact to one part of the human body may have impacts on other parts. Cosmologically, the Stoics used this same notion to describe the universe as a living organism, perfect and unified, with its parts relating to the whole in a similar way as limbs relate to a body. This provide the basis for a very different understanding of ourselves and our relationship with the universe and with each other.

The Stoics held that pneuma, or divine breath—a mixture of elemental fire and air—permeated and animated all things, sustaining and relating each part to the whole and thus to every part. According to this physics, all motion and action can be traced to movements of pneuma which reflect the actions and intentions of the divine. Because the Stoics understood pneuma as reflecting the logos of divine will and as penetrating and connecting all matter, the Stoics saw all things as acting in sympathy (sympatheia) with one another such that each element of the physical world reflected or expressed the greater divine harmony

Sympatheia, as a cultural-historical concept, demarcates one example of a divinatory cosmology: a worldview in which the divine permeates nature and in which individual beings are inseparable from the rest of the cosmos. If the divine pervades all things, and if the macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm, then only the limits of human insight and ingenuity prevent one from discovering or intuiting (or, for that matter, divining) truths about the universe on the basis of anything whatsoever: the flights of birds, the movements of stars, and the scattering patterns of leaves and grains equally participate in and reflect divine harmony.

This provides a justification for divination and astrology—for astral bodies would just be like more massive limbs of the cosmic body, their movements reverberating down to we human beings (that is, the smaller limbs of the cosmos)—but also a more beautiful, connected, and ethical way of relating to one another.

Sympatheia expresses our mutual interdependence and innate, inextricable interconnection.

The Sympatheia Collection

The Sympatheia Collection holds talismans from three elections from 2023, each of which captures one aspect of the jewel that is the cosmic Sympatheia connecting us all. Although they are not the only doorway into astromagical relationship, astrological talismans represent a particularly potent form of astrological magic that can put us in direct, day-to-day connection with astral spirits and celestial powers.

The 3rd Lunar Mansion All Good Things talisman reminds us that we are never cut off from the beneficent factors of the universe, and help us to feel as though our steps along the starry path are in greater sympathy with the workings and intentions of the living cosmos.

The fixed star Sirius Favor & Peace talismans remind us of the harmony that connects all things in the Great Chain of Being, and stands for the possibility of raising our station above the chaos and troubles that afflict our lives.

And the fixed star Deneb Algedi Security & Order talismans taps us more directly into the structural, ordering forces of the cosmos, girding the foundations of our lives and domiciles such that the momentum of our lives can carry forward, unhindered and unwavering, allowing for maximal gain through minimal effort.

The two fixed star talismans from the Sympatheia collection embody something particularly profound about the mysteries of sympatheia, in that their mundane significations seem opposite somehow to their magical effects. In mundane astrology, Sirius is a star of conflagration—fire, violence, plagues, dog bites—but magically lends itself to talismans of peace and reconciliation. Similarly, Deneb Algedi signifies mundane polar extremes—beneficence and destructiveness, sorrow and happiness, and life and death—but magically seems to lock things down toward structural security.

These mundane-magical tensions and oppositions seem to point to the nondual nature of reality: the identity of opposites, the nonseparation of all things, the interpenetration and ultimate unity of all phenomena.

We hope that the talismans of the Sympatheia collection help bring you further into the heart of our mutual interdependence.

Idola Stellarum Puts the Stars in your Hands

By putting you in relationship with the powerful spirits who peer into the sublunary realm through these talismans, we hope you will be better equipped to face a strange, shifting, and at times terrifying world in which, too often, injustice reigns and corruption prevails. With institutions under siege (some rightfully so) and social contracts disintegrating at the expense of the most oppressed among us, we have to rely on each other. Thankfully, our interdependent networks of care can include celestial angels, too.

The spirits who guide Idola Stellarum know that if we can begin to equip each other with deep and consequential magic, we can begin to make the types of changes that many of us were told as children were possible, and reach toward the dreams which we knew could come true, but which remain withheld by those who hold structural and institutional power. To that end, we provide extensive information on our talismans, because we believe in making the tradition of astrological magic more accessible and allowing people to step into talismanic relationships equipped with the knowledge they need.

On each product page, we offer photographs and a narrative description of the talisman series before showcasing the electional chart (with a precise time range specifying the beginning and end of the ritual window) and discussing the essential features of the election, further magical factors of the election, and reflections on weaknesses of the election. We include ceremonial details of petitions, altars, suffumigations, and, of course, the talismans themselves.

Sanctifying Relationships

In building Idola Stellarum, and in thinking about the Sympatheia collection, we aimed to not only put people in relationship with talismanic spirits, but to offer an experience of coming into connection. We, as beings of the sublunary realm, rely on our visceral and tactile senses, and so Idola Stellarum set our intention to usher in an experience of quality that would appeal to the aesthetics of body and spirit alike.

To this end, each Idola Stellarum talisman will include: a foil-stamped black velvet jewelry box for safe keeping and display; a detailed writeup about the nature of the talisman, the circumstances and rituals of its creation, and guidance on how to introduce yourself to the talismanic spirit; and a certificate of authenticity signed by Rain & Pallas. All talismanic jewelry in the Sympatheia collection has been set in high quality metal settings. All pendant settings in the Sympatheia collection are sterling silver (some gold-plated), and each pendant talisman includes a matching sterling silver or gold plated sterling silver rope chain in your choice of length.

Additionally, many questions related to the talismans you may have are answered in our frequently asked questions. We take our role as mages and mediators of the celestial spirits very seriously, and we stand by our work and the relationships we build, tend, and foster. To this end, each Idola Stellarum talisman is backed by a number of guarantees, which we encourage you to look over, as well as transparency about what we are not able to guarantee.

Note that good relationships have boundaries, and you should know ours: due to the nature of astrological talismans, all sales are final, and no refunds or exchanges will be offered. Please read our returns & exchanges policy for more information.

Whether or not you hope to meet one of our talismans from this collection, we warmly invite you to keep up to date on our mailing list for more opportunities to join Idola Stellarum for events, spaces, and conversations intended to deepen and improve our relationships, talismanic and otherwise.

Membership in the Inner Sanctum is currently the only way to gain premiere early access to (as well as a member discount on) Idola Stellarum talisman collections. After Inner Sanctum early access, collections go out to our mailing list. Only after this are our collections open to the public, and then only if any talismans remain. The Inner Sanctum is currently closed, but opens quarterly.

Thank you for joining us at Idola Stellarum.
