The Call of the Mountaintop

It is no accident that since antiquity, stories and legends have told of sages, hermits, and mystics retreating to the seclusion of the mountains to seek closer connection with the divine. The crags and the bluffs of the world have long been associated with gods. Think Mount Olympus, Mount Sinai, Mount Everest, and Mount Fuji, whose majesty is evident and who have all been associated with divine powers and gods. In the quiet remoteness of the high wilderness, nature speaks with voices that transcend worldly boundaries.

In his powerful essay “Peaks and Vales,” the archetypal psychologist James Hillman quotes the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet:

“The relation of height to spirituality is not merely metaphorical. It is physical reality. The most spiritual people on this planet live in the highest places. So do the most spiritual flowers… I call the high and light aspects of my being spirit and the dark and heavy aspect soul… Spirit is a land of high, white peaks and glittering jewel-like lakes and flowers. Life is sparse and sounds travel great distances.”

The Summit collection does not elevate spirit over soul, but rather celebrates the closeness of the divine spark among the rarefied air of cliffs and mountaintops, where spirits seem to clamber more readily to be heard.

It is also worth noting that the model of the world handed down from the Neoplatonists, through whom we receive much of the magic within this tradition, the heavens are viewed as a vertical hierarchy. Going to the mountaintop physically symbolizes the ascent through the spheres: from the sublunary realm to the lunar, the mercurial, venusian, solar, martial, jovial, saturnine, up to the sphere of the fixed stars.

It is no accident that the numerical majority of talismans offered in the Summit collection are fixed star talismans (Alkaid and Alcyone). What’s more, they are both, in their own way, talismans of spirit contact. The other two talismans, while of the planetary spirits (Mars and Jupiter), are a bit further removed, being beyond the reach of the Sun.

The Summit collection draws our attention upward and outward, encouraging us to strive beyond the realms of social capital and quotidian concerns—not to ignore them, but to prepare ourselves to approach them from a more resourced, insightful, and wise perspective.

Climb to the Summit

Summit holds talismans from four elections between January and October 2022. The Summit is held up by each and every one of the talismans in the collection.

The Majesty, Wisdom, & Plenty talisman represents the halcyon achievements of those who have earned their place at the crown of the world. The Vigor & Valor talisman embodies the resolve, endurance, and grit necessary to weather the climb to the mountaintop. The Protection & Relation talisman stands for the bones of the earth that provide the essential support of the mountain. The Vision & Insight talisman shines in the heights above the summit, the link between the sages and hermits who retreated to the mountains for spiritual insight.

The grimoire Picatrix speaks of the process of one’s own spirit uniting with the power of the heavens. Idola Stellarum exists to help connect people to talismanic spirits, and the spirits of the Summit collection call us upward to accept and achieve celestial gifts—not just for their own sake, but to eventually bring them back down the mountain and share what we have learned on the mountaintop with our friends, families, and allies. Note that all astrological talismans by their time-sensitive nature are extremely limited edition. Only a relatively small number of each specific talisman we release will ever be available. Once they are gone, they are gone.

Idola Stellarum Puts the Stars in your Hands

By putting you in relationship with the powerful spirits who peer into the sublunary realm through these talismans, we hope you will be better equipped to face a strange, shifting, and at times terrifying world in which, too often, injustice reigns and corruption prevails. With institutions under siege (some rightfully so, admittedly) and social contracts disintegrating at the expense of the most oppressed among us, we have to rely on each other. Thankfully, our interdependent networks of care can include celestial angels, too.

The spirits who guide Idola Stellarum know that if we can begin to equip each other with deep and consequential magic, we can begin to make the types of changes that many of us were told as children were possible, and reach toward the dreams which we knew could come true, but which remain withheld by those who hold structural and institutional power. To that end, we provide extensive information on our talismans, because we believe in making the tradition of astrological magic more accessible and allowing people to step into talismanic relationships equipped with the knowledge they need.

On each product page, we offer photographs and a narrative description of the talisman series before showcasing the electional chart (with a precise time range specifying the beginning and end of the ritual window) and discussing the essential features of the election, further magical factors of the election, and reflections on weaknesses of the election. We include ceremonial details of petitions, altars, suffumigations, and, of course, the talismans themselves.  

Sanctifying Relationships

In building Idola Stellarum, and in thinking about the Summit collection, we aimed to not only put people in relationship with talismanic spirits, but to offer an experience of coming into connection. We, as beings of the sublunary realm, rely on our visceral and tactile senses, and so Idola Stellarum set our intention to usher in an experience of quality that would appeal to the aesthetics of body and spirit alike.

To this end, each Idola Stellarum talisman will include: a foil-stamped black velvet jewelry box for safe keeping and display; a detailed writeup about the nature of the talisman, the circumstances and rituals of its creation, and guidance on how to introduce yourself to the talismanic spirit; and a certificate of authenticity signed by Rain & Pallas. All talismanic jewelry in the Summit collection has been set in a sterling silver setting and includes a matching sterling silver rope chain.

We take our role as mages and mediators of the celestial spirits very seriously, and we stand by our work and the relationships we build, tend, and foster.
