“Aristotle spoke of this to King Alexander: ‘O Alexander, be careful at every moment and in all your activities that you conduct yourself according to the motions, aspects, and qualities of the celestial bodies, for if you study these things, your desires will be accomplished, and you will have whatever you will.’ This saying is very good and useful, because it indicates the difference between the actions of the wise and those of the foolish, who are unable to pass beyond practical considerations, and to whom thoughts concerning another world are shrouded in darkness; for thoughts concerning another world are nothing other than the wisdom that surrounds all sciences and all wisdom teachings.”

Introducing the Salvo Collection
[This is written by Rain in the first person.]
During the summer after my first year of graduate school, my mentor encouraged me to attend an interdisciplinary conference on phenomenology. My mentor was a phenomenological psychologist trained by Amedeo Giorgi, the psychologist who adapted Husserl’s philosophy into a qualitative research method as a branch of the ‘human science’ movement.[1] The human sciences aim to study subjects such as psychology from within, inclusive of experience, rather than using positivistic methods based on the assumptions of the natural sciences that view human (and other) beings as objects to be studied and controlled from the outside.
Especially early on in my formal studies, I was very fired up about scientific racism,[2] psychiatric harm,[3] military funding in psychology,[4] and all manner of harmful and unethical practices that I saw as stemming from basic problems in the epistemology and philosophical assumptions of the discipline of psychology, which had fashioned itself as a natural science rather than a social or human science. I would regularly challenge other students and my professors in seminars about their harmful assumptions and was very angry not only at the ignorance I saw all around me but also the apparent lack of curiosity or even openness to considering alternative perspectives. There were honestly a lot of targets, and I was never afraid to fire a Salvo. This got me proverbially called into the principal’s office on more than one occasion (tense meetings with the head of the department).
At the phenomenology conference, circumstances somehow led me to end up getting a ride back from the conference venue to my lodgings one night from Amedeo Giorgi himself. Seeking his advice, I asked him out of frustration and, to be honest, a little bit of despair, how to best go about getting people to pay attention to the deep and trenchant critiques of psychological science that I had been so tuned into. I wish I had written down exactly what he told me. To paraphrase him through my imperfect memory, here’s the lesson I took away from what Giorgi told me:
The basic fact of the matter is that no one listens to critique except maybe the people who already agree with you. Other people’s motivations to do what they’re doing run deep and are usually not rational, and any demand for them to stop what they are doing will threaten their identities and relationships. It’s a waste of energy to spend your time critiquing what other people are doing and trying to convince them to change their perspective, because if they can’t see or don’t understand an alternative, they can’t see anywhere to go from where they are. So, what is helpful and worth doing is to simply present the positive alternative with integrity and people will either see its value or they won’t.
Somewhat needless to say, this was not exactly what I wanted to hear. I was fired up. I could see the problems with the discipline, with the research, with the ideologies. The critiques felt important. They felt valuable. And this old guy was going to tell me that they were in some sense just off target?
Now, to be clear, I don’t necessarily agree with Giorgi in an absolute and rigid sense. The world needs all kinds of people and all kinds of action. It is, for example, vital and necessary for people to be able to name harm and speak truth to power—especially marginalized and oppressed people. In my own case, however, over time I was able to reflect on and understand the roots of my actions by the fruits of their effects. My critical perspective, however valid in the abstract, was serving to fuel my resentments, complicate my professional (and sometimes personal) relationships, and drain my capacity to, as Giorgi put it, present the positive alternative with integrity. My critical stance felt motivating and made me feel like I was on the right side, but was ultimately not helping me build relationships, help the people who had been and were being harmed by scientific psychology, or, again, support the positive alternative.
Shots Fired
What does any of this have to do with astrological magic? Well, despite repeated warnings in the Picatrix that the secrets of the art should be kept hidden, the contemporary revival of astrological magic in the English-speaking world is very public. During and in the wake of the eclipses in August of 2026, there has been a great deal of criticism of and accusation about figures in or adjacent to the industry of astrological magic—so much so that we felt moved to issue a statement of policy relevant to this issue.
Again, to really underscore the need for nuance, critique and constructive effort are by no means mutually exclusive. In graduate school, however, as I reflected on my own experience, the harsh critique I was bringing (which was in part, to be clear, based on personal experiences of harm) and that was serving as a kind of fuel for me was ultimately producing more smoke and exhaust than warmth. This is why, as we emphasized in our statement of policy, we time and again stress the need for discernment. In any given case it’s worth inquiring into our motivations. Does the situation need another Salvo (or defensive maneuver, for that matter) or could that explosive energy be redirected to some more effective task, or perhaps even toward supporting people experiencing harm and exclusion?
The Salvo collection came together in a somewhat unexpected way, but the Moon-Mars-ness of it all certainly made us reflect and take stock of our values and our priorities. One of the things we have brought up several times this past year has been the constructive aspects of Mars. Ficino associated Mars with the imagination,[5] which plays a critical role in astrological magic: the mage, “desiring to make something, first imagines the form of the thing which he (sic) desires to impress upon some matter through his work.”[6] Mars, via the imagination and the propulsive forces of motivation, serves as a bridge between our current reality and a potentially better one; through the Moon’s domain of knowledge,[7] we can understand what we need in order to build that bridge.
In the context of a culture of declining literacy,[8] AI psychosis,[9] and a social media ecosystem that magnifies outrage and cultivates dysregulation,[10] discernment around how we direct our attention and effort becomes paramount. How we treat each other becomes paramount. Speaking for myself (Rain), I can say for sure that whatever personal feelings and judgments I have about my peers and interlocutors in the industry of astrological magic, their efforts are ultimately more in line with mine than not in the grand scheme of the effort to push back against the colonizing effects of secular materialism and disenchantment. In that light especially, it becomes clear to me that considering my specific position, my efforts are much better spent on the attempt to contribute to the positive alternative with integrity than to any criticism or insistence that I somehow know ‘the right way’ to approach this complex ancient science that is only very partially available to me in English-language translation. As far as that positive alternative goes, people will either see its value or they won’t.
Salvo is our 15th collection of astrological talismans. Alongside this we have been working to build a library of resources for enthusiasts of astrological magic. Without a doubt, there are probably reasons to critique us, and we hope if people feel strongly about anything that we do that they will reach out to have a conversation. In the meantime, we will continue to quietly do what we do and offer respect to others who work with integrity to further this complex art.

- Mars in Capricorn – Courage & Resolve
- Moon in Cancer – Remembrance
Note that all astrological talismans by their time-sensitive nature are extremely limited edition. Only a relatively small number of each specific talisman we release will ever be available. Once they are gone, they are gone.
(Note also: weight and dimensions listed in product attributes are approximate weights for the entire shipped package, not for the talismans themselves individually. None of the decorative elements displayed in altar photos or product shots besides the chains and jewelry boxes are included with purchased talismans.)
Mars in Capricorn – Courage & Resolve

Ensouled during Mars hour on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 between 10:31am and 11:06am EST.
Of the nature of Mars in Capricorn, the Courage & Resolve talismans were created with the intent of granting their bearers the steadfastness of Mars in his exaltation.
The Courage & Resolve talismans were carved from 13x18mm amethyst and 30x40mm red jasper cabochons and set in sterling silver crown bezel pendant settings.
This election is inflected by the benefic influence of Jupiter, and these Mars talismans are appropriate for a wide range of folks. That said, we usually do not recommend talismans of the malefic planets as a person’s first talisman, and if your natal Mars has significant afflictions, we encourage extra discernment around this talisman.
Moon in Cancer – Remembrance

Moon in Cancer – Remembrance
Ensouled during Moon hour on Friday, August 30, 2024 between 2:16am and 2:43am EDT.
Of the nature of the Moon in Cancer, these talismans were created with the intent of endowing their bearers with improved memory and capacity to retain knowledge.
The Remembrance talismans come in three varieties:
- 8x10mm emerald cabochons set in sterling silver ring settings – $395 (reflecting the comparably more expensive stones and settings)
- 13x18mm aquamarine cabochons set in sterling silver crown bezel pendant settings – $350
- 20mm lapis lazuli cabochons set in sterling silver crown bezel pendant settings $350
Lunar talismans can come with turbulent adjustment periods. We recommend careful discernment and divination around whether this talisman is right for you to anyone with (1) a seriously afflicted natal Moon or (2) ongoing trouble with sleep disturbance, dissociation, mania, or emotional volatility. This talisman, like all of our talismans, is not designed to diagnose or treat any medical or psychiatric condition (see our guarantees & disclaimers).
Idola Stellarum Puts the Stars in your Hands
By putting you in relationship with the powerful spirits who peer into the sublunary realm through these talismans, we hope you will be better equipped to face a strange, shifting, and at times terrifying world in which, too often, injustice reigns and corruption prevails. With institutions under siege (some rightfully so) and social contracts disintegrating at the expense of the most oppressed among us, we have to rely on each other. Thankfully, our interdependent networks of care can include celestial angels, too.
The spirits who guide Idola Stellarum know that if we can begin to equip each other with deep and consequential magic, we can begin to make the types of changes that many of us were told as children were possible, and reach toward the dreams which we knew could come true, but which remain withheld by those who hold structural and institutional power. To that end, we provide extensive information on our talismans, because we believe in making the tradition of astrological magic more accessible and allowing people to step into talismanic relationships equipped with the knowledge they need.
On each product page linked above, we offer photographs and a narrative description of the talisman series before showcasing the electional chart (with a precise time range specifying the beginning and end of the ritual window) and discussing the essential features of the election, further magical factors of the election, and reflections on weaknesses of the election. We include ceremonial details of petitions, altars, suffumigations, and, of course, the talismans themselves.
Sanctifying Relationships
In building Idola Stellarum, we aim to not only put people in relationship with talismanic spirits, but to offer an experience of coming into connection. We, as beings of the sublunary realm, rely on our visceral and tactile senses, and so Idola Stellarum set our intention to usher in an experience of quality that would appeal to the aesthetics of body and spirit alike.
To this end, each Idola Stellarum talisman will include: a foil-stamped black velvet jewelry box for safe keeping and display; a detailed writeup about the nature of the talisman, the circumstances and rituals of its creation, and guidance on how to introduce yourself to the talismanic spirit; and a certificate of authenticity signed by Rain & Pallas. All talismanic jewelry in the Salvo collection has been set in high quality metal settings. All pendant settings in the Salvo collection are sterling silver or and each pendant talisman includes a matching 22″ sterling silver rope chain. The Remembrance emerald rings are set in sterling silver ring settings.
Additionally, many questions related to the talismans you may have are answered in our frequently asked questions. We take our role as mages and mediators of the celestial spirits very seriously, and we stand by our work and the relationships we build, tend, and foster. To this end, each Idola Stellarum talisman is backed by several guarantees, which we encourage you to look over, and we also endeavor to be very transparent about what we are not able to guarantee.
Note that good relationships have boundaries, and you should know ours: due to the nature of astrological talismans, all sales are final, and no refunds or exchanges will be offered. Please read our returns & exchanges policy for more information.
Whether or not you hope to meet one of our talismans from this collection, we warmly invite you to keep up to date on our mailing list for more opportunities to join Idola Stellarum for events, spaces, and conversations intended to deepen and improve our relationships, talismanic and otherwise.
Membership in the Inner Sanctum is currently the only way to gain premiere early access to (as well as a member discount on) Idola Stellarum talisman collections. After Inner Sanctum early access, collections go out to our mailing list. Only after this are our collections open to the public, and then only if any talismans remain.
